  1. Topic: Chem Math Aim: How do you represent large quantities of atoms? Do Now: Convert 7yd to inches – show work! HW:

  2. The Mole • Describes a quantity • We use terms like this all the time! • 1 Dozen eggs = ______________ • 1 pair of shoes = ______________ • 1 Ton of bricks = ______________ • 1 MOLE = __________________ • This is known as Avogadro’s Number. 6.02 x 1023 particles

  3. Values

  4. Molecules Molecules Moles Liters Liters Mass Mass Mole Conversions / 6.02 x 1023 x 6.02 x 1023 / 22.4L x 22.4L x gfm / gfm

  5. Sample Problems • Converting from grams  moles • Formula: TABLE T! • # moles = given mass / gram formula mass • How many moles is 54 grams of LiF? • What you know: given mass (54 grams) • What you need: # moles • You can easily calculate: gram formula mass • Li: (1 x 7), F: (1 x 19) = 7 + 19 = 26 grams/mol • # moles = 54 grams / (26 grams/mol) • = 2.1 mol

  6. Sample Problem • How many moles is 108 grams of H2O? • What do you know from the problem? • What do you need to know? • Do you need any more information to solve? • Plug in values & solve • # mol = given mass / gfm • # mol = 108 / 18 • # mol = 6 mol

  7. Sample Problems • Converting from moles  grams • Formula: TABLE T! • # moles = given mass / gram formula mass • What is the mass of 2 moles of NO2? • What you know: 2 moles NO2 • What you need: grams of NO2 • What you can easily calculate: gfm of NO2 • N: (1 x 14), O: (2 x 16) = 14 + 32 = 46 • 2 mol = mass / 46 g/mol • 92 g

  8. Sample Problem • How many grams are present in 40.5 mol of sulfuric acid (H2SO4)? • What do you know from the problem? • What do you need to know? • Do you need any more information to solve? • Plug in values & solve • # mol = given mass / gfm • 40.5 mol = x / 98 g/mol • 3969 g = x

  9. Sample Problems 1. I have 2 moles of NaCl. How many molecules are there? 2. I have 3.01 x 1023 molecules of H2O. How many moles do I have? 3. What is the mass of 1 mole of NaCl? 4. What is the mass of 2 moles of NaCl? 5. I have 3.01 x 1023 molecules of NaCl. How many grams do I have? 6. I have 22.4 liters of oxygen gas. How many moles do I have? 7. I have 44.8 liters of oxygen gas. How many moles do I have? 8. I have 0.5 moles of oxygen gas. How many liters do I have? 9. I have 3.01 x 1023 molecules of H2O gas. How many liters do I have? 10. A student has 9 grams of H2O: A) How many moles does he have? B) How many liters does he have? C) How many molecules does he have? 11. I have 36 grams of water. How many molecules of H2O are there?

  10. Mole Conversions- Practice Calculate the # of moles of glucose (C6H12O6) in 5.380g of C6H12O6.

  11. Mole Conversions- Practice How many moles of NaHCO3 are there in 508g of NaHCO3?

  12. Mole Conversions- Practice Calculate the mass in grams, of 0.433 mol of calcium nitrate.

  13. Mole Conversions- Practice What is the mass, in grams, of 6.33 mol of NaHCO3
