Redox Reactions • Reactions where e- are gained by one atom or ion and lost by another atom or ion • Reduction – gain of e- • Oxidation – loss of e- • Oxidizing Agent – reactant that accepts e- and so oxidizes the other reactant • Reducing Agent - reactant that donates e- and so reduces the other reactant
Net-Ionic Equation • Redox reactions are written as net ionic equations • an ionic equation where the spectator ions have been removed
Ex. Zinc metal reacts with copper sulphate to form copper metal and zinc sulphate
Predicting Spontaneity • Write the net ionic equation • Add arrows to indicate gain/loss of e • Use oxidizer table to identify which metal is a stronger reducing agent and which ion is a stronger oxidizing agent • If the stronger reducing agent is losing e and the stronger oxidizing agent is gaining e, then the reaction will proceed spontaneously • If step 4 is not true, then the reaction will not proceed spontaneously
