Time Correlation and Synchronization BOF:Report of the Fall 2010 Meeting London October 29, 2010 Ed Greenberg NASA/JPL
Meeting Agenda • Welcome, opening remarks, logistics, introduction for new attendees • Discussion of requirements and possible approaches • Development of draft WG Charter • Adjourn
Executive Summary • Discussed the desires of the agencies to achieve from the WG. • ESA’s main objective is a Magenta Book identifying best practices for time correlation with current standards • NASA is interested in advocating methods to achieve much more accurate time correlations for space missions. • NASA has a long term goal of establishing a standard for synchronization of the clocks on vehicles within a remote operational network.
Summary of Goals and Deliverables • Developed a Draft charter for the WG. • Document the totality of the desired tasks • Very aggressive plan which may be very hard to get adequate support • Focus of the Proposed Charter • Document current methodologies • Advocate the use of Regenerative PN Ranging for Time Correlation • Advocate the space qualification of Chip Scale Atomic Clocks (i.e. Symmetricom’s CSAC device)
Resource Problems • Resources are an issue: • ESA has limited resources and is only interested in a magenta book that will help future missions better select CCSDS protocol that provide adequate time correlation
