  1. Feedback on homeworkOutline the main features of the WMM (4 marks). • Very good overall. • Outline means describe (A01) – you do not need to include any research. • Include research in the evaluation along with the strengths and weaknesses (A02).

  2. Feedback continued… Have to include: - • A definition of what WM is – it is another name for STM, and involves active processing and short-term storage of information. • The relationship between components – the central executive controls the ‘slave systems.’ • Sub-components of the phonological loop – phonological store and articulatory control process. Good to include: - • The researcher’s names and date (Baddeley and Hitch, 1974). • The role of the episodic buffer.

  3. Eyewitness Testimony Memory in everyday life (the practical applications of memory)

  4. What is eyewitness testimony (EWT)? • Legal term. • Eyewitnesses are individuals who give evidence in court concerning the identity of someone who has committed a crime. • An EWT is an account of an event from an individual’s memory. • Also known as ‘eyewitness memory’ by psychologists.

  5. Stages of EWT • The witness encodes details of the event and the people involved into LTM. (Encoding can be partial and distorted – crimes happen very quickly). • The witness retains the information for a period of time. (Memories may be lost or modified). • The witness retrieves the memory from storage. (What happens during the reconstruction of the memory can affect its accuracy e.g. type of questioning).

  6. Context of EWT • The accuracy of EWT has been questioned. • What could happen if an individual’s EWT is inaccurate? • Inaccurate EWTs can lead to false convictions. • Research in the USA has shown that inaccurate EWT is the main factor leading to false convictions. • Wells et al (1998). • Court of Appeal (1977) rejected EWT that was presented without supportive evidence – since then prosecutions are unlikely to be made on EWT alone (greater use of evidence like DNA).

  7. Loftus and Palmer (1974)Role of misleading information Identify the aims, procedure, findings, conclusions and criticisms of the study.

  8. Leading (misleading) questions • A question that, either by its form or by its content, suggests to the witness what answer is desired or leads them to the desired answer.
