GEF Communication Workshop Vienna: January 19/20, 2006 Opportunities Regional Dialogue: • Regional desire for peace ; ongoing negotiation on the legal regime; Tehran Convention Economic potentials - Hydrocarbon resources, third in world ; rich bioresources , some $ 5 billion ; transport corridor;Ecotourism. Time factor - Time has not yet run out for Caspian !

GEF Communication Workshop Vienna: January 19/20, 2006 • Social, economic and political challenges • Relatively low total GDP, low Per capita GDP and HDR • High expectations & Unsatisfied demands • Legal regime not settled • political and ethnical conflicts • Young democracies with long memories of past • Low priority to environment, low environment budgets • Strong outside interests

GEF Communication Workshop Vienna: January 19/20, 2006 • Achievements • Created , supported regional dialogue; Convention, PCU, NFPS, MPPAS , RAGS • Diagnosed transboundary issues , suggested solutions: TDA, stakeholders analysis, NCAPs, SAP, PPS • Resource mobilization: PIPS, MSGP , approaches to the industry • Pilot projects and capacity building efforts e.g EVE

GEF Communication Workshop Vienna: January 19/20, 2006 What do we expect from this workshop? • Let us know what is meant by communication ?! • Share experience on data and information access in a formalist region where nothing goes free! . • Share experience on how to realistically engage the stakeholders in getting things done!
