Psychoanalytic Theory • Attempts to explain personality, mental disorders, and motivation in terms of unconscious determinants of behavior
Psychoanalysis • When patient is relaxed (on couch facing away) and is saying whatever comes to mind (free association/talking cure) to find out what underlying issues are causing problems • Using this technique and his study of dreams, Freud believed he could tap into the unconscious
Freudian Slips • The unconscious is expressed in dreams as well as slips of the tongue (Freudian slips)
Consciousness Conscious - acute awareness Ego: Reality - combines drives of superego and Id Preconscious - not aware at this time, but can become aware Super-Ego: ideals, goals Unconscious- difficult to access, but influential Id: basic, instinctual drives
