  1. Arrest, Booking, and Investigation Damian Munoz, Nate Shoemaker, Tyler Beller, Devon Waldrop, Hayley Sturgis

  2. Arrest • An arrest is the act of seizing someone into custody; following what the officer believes to be a crime, the suspect is arrested. Once arrested, the suspect is read their Miranda Rights and taken into custody. • Typically, when one is arrested, they are taken to a police station for questioning. There, they are either charged with a crime or released. If under the age of eighteen, or a vulnerable adult, a parent, guardian, or relative is contacted. • The police are able to hold a suspect for up to 24 hours before they have to charge the individual with a crime of release them. If the suspect is suspected of a more serious crime such as murder, they can be held for 36-96 hours. If a suspected terrorist, one can be held for up to 14 days.

  3. Booking • Following the arrest of the suspect, they are taken to a police station and have to be booked. Booking is the process in which law enforcement creates official arrest records. • Personal items are taken into police custody and the suspect is photographed, fingerprinted, and, at times, sampled for DNA. Police check if there are any outstanding warrants for the suspect and question details regarding gang affiliations, outside relationships, etc, for the reason of placing a suspect in an appropriate area of the holding quarters. • The suspect is searched for contraband if it has not already been done during the arrest. • One is not entitled to a lawyer during the booking process for it is an administrative process.

  4. Investigation • An investigation is an applied science involving the study of facts used to locate, identify, and prove the guilt or innocence of the suspect. • During the investigation, a myriad of techniques and processes are used to obtain information such as interviewing the suspect and witnesses, analyzing details pertaining to the case, gathering evidence, and creating a timeline of the events that took place during the time of the crime. • The information acquired during the investigation can be used the clear the suspect of guilt or to prove guilt.
