The Rise of Extreme Sports • Over the last forty years or so, there has been a movement toward more individual, adrenaline-based sports. • Motocross, snowboarding, skydiving, surfing, racing, sandboarding, water sports
Why? • The movement toward these extreme sports came about with advances in technology and rises in the quality of life • With more disposable income in the hands of the consumer, more expensive sports that require costly equipment (more equipment than a team sport, which usually requires a ball) experienced an increase in popularity. • Technology made sports like skydiving and snowboarding possible (planes, parachutes, chairlifts)
More Free Time = More Leisure Time • With constantly evolving technology, comes more and more leisure time. • A century ago, it took 4 hours to wash a load of clothes and another 4½ hours to iron them. • Now this whole task can be completed in 45 minutes • New advances in washer technology • New advances in fabric technology • All of this newly available free time allows for more leisure time.
Technology • Thanks to technology, the home is no longer restricted to being a place of simple leisure. It can be a place to do work, exercise, listen to music, or watch movies. • The leisure time of past generations -- characterized by greater social involvement and longer chunks of uninterrupted time -- does not exist for most of the population, experts say. • The convenience and accessibility of modern technology contributes greatly to the "privatizing" of leisure
Technology makes it easier to get what we want, when we want it, while remaining entirely alone. The joy comes from no longer following routines that are laid down for you and doing things because it's what everyone else is doing.
Technology is becoming a bigger part of leisure every yearClass based; wealthier families will have more access to better technology
The Phenomenon of Videophilia • Technology has made everyday life easier to a point where we are dependant on it. • Videophilia-The new human tendency to focus on sedentary activities involving electronic media. • People in the US and overseas are spending far less time in nature than ever before. • Future leisure will cont. to encourage a sedentary lifestyle that is highly dependant on technology.
The Future of the Economy and its Affects on Leisure • Since the collapse of our economy it has become more difficult to partake in leisure. • Most leisure activities require money especially the increasing amount of technological leisure activities that have become prevalent today. • The current economic state has also caused a decrease in government funding of leisure activities.
Corporate Sponsorship of Parks • There have been huge budget cuts in the department of natural recourses as well as other leisure based departments • Because of this they are searching for corporate sponsors. • People have concerns about corporations who pollute using this as a cover for their environmental degradation • Other concerns exist with corporations affecting the quality of the parks.
Trends in our generations leisure • Party Scene replacing ”old fashioned” fun like bowling or going to the movies • Facebook/ online networking • Online games • “Last Child in the Woods” • Pop Culture and media dictates leisure
Where will this take us? • Social lives are largely based on Facebook interactions • Loss of appreciation and care for environment, perpetuating environmental problems we are facing today. • A population of people who are heavily influenced by the media • A heavy dependency on technology to help us
