Samantha’s Reflections: From History and Philosophy of Education
The Purpose of These Slides • This slideshow is presenting how all the information I have taken in from this class will affect my professional development and consequently, my future students.
Information, Readings, and Experiences • Much of the information was not new, but we delved in deeper than before. • The information regarding the previous philosophies that have come before mine I do not see affecting my students, unconsciously the knowledge will alter how I create my own philosophy, but I do not intend on making it a large factor in my decisions
Information, Readings, and Experiences Continued • Most of the experiences in this class do not directly affect my students, but will instead help me develop myself as a teacher, which will in turn help my students. • Specifically an experience that will help me in the future is going through the application process and creating my professional portfolio
The Essential Questions-Answered: Why is society, important in knowing yourself, your students, their families? • Society and culture define who we are and what we value. It wasn’t so long ago that society valued learning trades and how to run a home, and the schools catered to that. Now, the focus is on higher learning and technology, knowing the current atmosphere is essential to providing the type of education my students will need and want.
How the Major Historical Events and Philosophical Trends Impacted the Development of Education? • The current trends in society dictated what we taught our children, and for how long. Previously only men were workers and thus the only receivers of instruction. War time brought on lessons on conservation, self reliance, and home care whereas the space race brought an emphasis on science and technology. Education shifts to go with the changing focus of America
Why do “formal” philosophies and ethics affect your personal philosophy of education? • As with any ideal you hear, learning about other’s philosophies on education allows me to pull out ideas I agree with and may not have thought of and add them to my own personal feelings. It also allows me to see what effects have occurred from someone else implementing those previous ideals and the fallout from them
How does your personal philosophy of education prepare you and your students to be life long learners? • My philosophy addresses this question specifically by stating that I want to teach my students how to be successful readers and writers and how to enjoy doing these things so that they will become life long learners and maybe even continue to do so for fun.
Learning About Cultures • One way to learn about my students culture, is to get to know them personally. Learning as much about them without crossing the line, and involving their families will help greatly with this • Another way to learn about the children in my classroom is to be an active member in my town, to get out and be involved with as many of the potential parents and students as possible
Professional Development • Student teaching will be a major learning experience, I hope to follow that up with a position at a school gaining more valuable experience, and of course to stay on top of my own education with graduate school and classes in the latest technologies or theories
Staying in Contact • Aside from conferences, seminars, and future schooling, I think the internet offers a great tool for joining communities of other educators. Many organizations have created websites where individuals can post unit and lesson plans and converse with others in their field.
