  1. Gettysburg Address • After 3 days of fighting in July of 1863 23,000 Union men and 28,000 Confederate men lay dead or wounded • President Lincoln helped dedicate a cemetery in Nov. for all the men

  2. Ending the War • Richmond, VA was evacuated on April 2, 1865 • Lincoln visited the city and was welcomed by the free slaves • Lee’s army surrendered at the Appotomax Court House on April 9 • J. Davis was captured in Georgia 1 month later and imprisoned • By the end of May all Confederate forces surrendered

  3. Lincoln is Dead • On April 14, 1865 at Washington’s Ford Theatre Lincoln was assassinated • John Wilkes Booth snuck into Lincoln’s seat box and shot him in the head • Lincoln died the next morning after never regaining consciousness

  4. A “New Revolution” • First Modern War • Firepower was enhanced (range, accuracy) • Civilian Technology • McCormick’s reaper provided needed grain • Singer’s sewing machine made uniforms • Standard clothing sizes were introduced b/c of factories producing them • Mass markets for manufactured goods reduced prices

  5. Devastated South • Physical Destruction • Widespread in the south where most fighting took place • Scorched earth technique had been used • South’s Economy • Crops, animals, etc were damaged or destroyed • Confederate $ was worthless • No more labor (free slaves)

  6. Devastated South • Society • 250,000 soldiers were dead • Feared rise of former slaves • Gov’t • All gov’t established during the CW were given up • No trial for war crimes
