Difficulty in recruiting Physicians • 60% of the area of the country, 16% of the population • Including underprivileged population (27% of Beer-Sheva county are Bedouin) • Average socioeconomic status lower than the rest of the country • Among Israelis who are foreign medical graduates, only residents of the Negev come to Soroka for internship • Higher unemployment, lower average salaries lead to difficulty in spouse employment

Research • Senior faculty provided with funds to initiate research • Assistance in locating additional funds • Junior faculty: • Research assistants funded by Soroka • Assistance in printing posters • English language editing service • Plan for Research unit next summer
