  1. The Layers of the Earth!

  2. Earth Layers • The Earth is divided into four main layers. *Inner Core *Outer Core *Mantle *Crust

  3. The Crust * Like the skin of an apple-very thin compared to the other three layers. *The crust makes up 1% of the Earth. It is 20 miles deep. * The crust of the Earth is broken into many pieces called plates.

  4. The Mantle • The mantle is the layer below the crust. • The mantle is the largest layer of the Earth = 4,000 miles deep • The mantle is divided into two regions: the upper and lower sections.

  5. Outer Core * The core of the Earth is like a ball of very hot metals. * The outer core is liquid. * The outer core is made up of iron and is very dense.

  6. Inner Core * The inner core of the Earth has temperatures and pressures so great that the metals are squeezed together and are not able to move. * The inner core is a solid, 800 miles deep.

  7. The Earth Bowl • First, everyone will receive their materials: 1. A plastic cup 2. A napkin 3. An Oreo The rest of the materials will be passed out by me as we go along! DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE MATERIALS AFTER YOU HAVE RECEIVED THEM. WAIT UNTIL I EXPLAIN WHAT TO DO.

  8. The Steps to Making the Layers! • First you will need to place the Oreo in the plastic cup. This will form the “core” of the Earth because it is solid and dense. 2. Next, we will make the outer core, this will be made of lemon pudding. I will be coming around with the pudding. BE PATIENT!

  9. 3. Now, we will be making the mantle. Because this is more solid than the outer core but not completely solid, we will be using Jell-o. Be patient as I come around with the Jell-o. 4. Now to top it all off we will be making the crust! I will be coming around with Rice Krispies and graham cracker crumbs.

  10. You have now made the Layers of the Earth!*The Crust (Rice Krispies)*The Mantle (orange Jell-o)* The Outer Core (lemon pudding)* The Inner Core (Oreo)

  11. Review • What are the four layers of the Earth? • The Earth’s crust is very ____________________ • The mantle is the largest layer of the Earth. True or False • Is the Outer Core a liquid or a solid? • The Earth Bowl graham cracker or Rice Krispies layer represents the Earth’s ________, which is 20 ______ deep. • Although the Earth Bowl is made of cool gelatin, the center of the earth is actually extremely ________________________.

  12. Answers! 1. Crust, Mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core 2.Thin 3.True 4. Liquid 5. Crust; miles 6. Hot

  13. Remember In the classroom the Earth Bowl took only a few hours to make; in actuality the earth took 5 billion years to form.

  14. Tell me… On the back of your worksheet tell me the most interesting thing you have learned!
