  1. EHA’s project results: Lifting Fuel Cell Powered Material Handling to New Heights in Europe Marieke Reijalt

  2. EHA : Membership Established in 2000 with 5 national associations, currently representing 21 national associations and the main European companies active in hydrogen infrastructure development Netherlands BelgiumFrance Germany Czech Rep. FYROMHungary Italy Latvia Norway Poland Portugal Spain Sweden Switzerland United Kingdom Bulgaria Denmark Finland Slovenia Ireland Since 2008 EHA is hosting the secretariat of Hydrogen, fuel cells and Electro-mobility in European Regions, HyER (former HyRaMP) Roundtable Capetown May 3, 2012

  3. EHA role at EU level EHA role at national/local level EHA Vision • Active role in EU policy development • Coordinated FCH JU project dissemination throughout Europe • Brokerage contact point for European hydrogen industry • Communicate EU policy and funding/financing to over 300 member companies across Europe • Engage 21 national member associations and local stakeholders in infrastructure roll-out

  4. EHA Target Audience General Public EU and National Policy makers • Regional Authorities Energy companies Key industry stakeholders ì

  5. Regional Developments Since 2008 EHA is hosting the European Regions and Municipalities Partnership of Hydrogen and Fuel Cells HyRAMP that on October 27 ,2011 changed its name to HyER: Hydrogen fuel cells and electro-mobility in European Regions Today more than 30 Regions members active in FC , H2 and electric transport; only one Polish membe is city of Wroclaw CHIC FC Bus project: Clean Hydrogen In European Cities

  8. FC-HyGuide Project Results: • LCA Guidance document: case studies and a step by step guidance manual for LCA practitioners in industry and research. • Training materials • Training courses on fuel cells and hydrogen production (September 2011) FC-HyGuide Importance: • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a tool to measure sustainability • LCA’s are mandatory for several FCH JU funded projects • Need to enable the market breakthrough of fuel cells and hydrogen technologies • Assist increase in public and private investment in FC and H2 technologies • Application areas • Transportation & Refuelling Infrastructure • H2 Production & Distribution • Stationary Power /CHP • Early Markets • Cross-cutting issues EHA offers EU wide dissemination of results www.fc-hyguide.eu ì

  9. Fuel Cell Hydrogen Forklift Demonstration SHEL: Sustainable Hydrogen Evaluation in Logistics HyLIFT-DEMO: European demonstration of hydrogen powered fuel cell forklifts Importance: • Demonstrate market readiness of FCH FLTs in Europe • FCH FLTs have reached commercialisation in US • FCH materials handling have benefits over competing technologies • Faster Fuelling / consistent power throughout entire shift EHA’s Role as Dissemination Partner: • Stakeholder identification • Identification of National Incentives • New Demo site engagement • Continuation plan for commercialisation

  10. WP2 – Demonstration specification & planning

  11. HyLIFT-DEMO Project • Large scale demonstration of Fuel Cell Hydrogen (FCH) powered FLTs • Two year demonstration: • 30 units of 2.5-3.5 tons • Fully integrated 3rd generation fuel cell systems • Hydrogen refuelling infrastructure at 3 end-user sites • 4.000 hours accelerated laboratory durability tests • Life time • Sensitivity shock • Vibration • Climate exposure www.hylift-demo.eu

  12. Prefered hydrogen distribution method Participants: H2 Logic | Linde End user site X (10 trucks, 1500hours/year ~ 6000kg H2/year ~ 135kg H2/week End user site Y 40bar Storage100-150kg storage (25.000– 45.000l) 350bar HRS30kg/day @15bar inlet 200bar distribution 40 bar (dump of) 10-40 bar End user site Z 200bar distribution Hydrogenproduction site

  13. National support mechanisms for fuel cells National support mechanisms for fuel cells - some incentives for clean vehicles Austria: €500 *, possible grant up to 600.000 over 10 yrs Belgium: €8990 *, maximum grants for renewable -25,5% of investment Cyprus: €700* Denmark: France: € 5000*, or not more than 20% Germany: Up to 40% investment costs Greece: no taxation Hungary: preferential interest rate, capital grants for renewable and energy efficiency Ireland: grant support €5000 Luxembourg: 3% interest on 50-60% loans Netherlands: reduction from taxable profit max €107 million per year of investment , cheaper loans 1-2% lower than prevailing rate (max 10 year duration) Spain: (regional) grant 22-40% eligible costs, renewable 30-50% Sweden: tax reduction of 0.5 Euro/Mwh UK: Demo projects may be funded by government, other efficient technologies may have 100% capital allowances in 2st year * Tax reduction

  14. HyFACTS • Identification, Preparation and Dissemination of Hydrogen Safety Facts to Regulators and Public Safety Officials • Aims to Develop and disseminate contemporary training material for regulators and public safety experts on safe and environmentally friendly use of hydrogen • Fuel cell and hydrogen (FCH) installations and mobile applications Public areas Companies Universities Research centers Fairgrounds Harbor sites www.hyfacts.eu

  15. HyFACTS www.hyfacts.eu Project Importance: • Current knowledge gap on hydrogen safety environmental issues • Building regulations, local regulations, public safety and permission of technical installations or earlier in project development • Need to inform decision making institutions • Need for more effective approval procedures • Permission problems of technology in realised projects and the regulations, codes and standards (RCS) currently in effect. EHA’s Role: • Identification and engagement of regulatory and public safety officials • Collection of current practices and training procedures in EU • Definition of national authorization procedures for hydrogen installations in EU Roundtable Capetown May 3, 2012

  16. HyFACTS Project Survey • 65.2% of interviewees engineering or consulting • 26.1% Regulatory authority (health and safety executive, building control, land use, local authority, etc.) • 55.6% deal with Hydrogen production unit • 55.6% Hydrogen passenger vehicle refueling station • 86.4% dealt with Fire Hazards • University most popular institution for training Most important topical areas: • Hazards associated with the use of hydrogen • Hydrogen detection and sensors • Regulations, codes and standards relevant to hydrogen safety • Risk analysis Link to Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/79VMV57
