In the Beginning… • In the late 1980s • Miami-Dade County was experiencing significant growth in outlying western areas • County Commission sensed urgency in providing transportation linkage • Called on FDOT to explore • East-West Transportation Corridor expansion • Central facility to link all modes of ground transportation and decongest airport access roads
MIC History • Congress adopts Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) in 1991 laying groundwork for MIC’s creative financing • FDOT commissions Parsons Brinckerhoff to conduct East-West Corridor Study • FHWA grants FDOT a ROD in September 1998 • FDOT turns project over to Miami-Dade Transit & Miami Dade Expressway Authority for implementation • FDOT commissions ICF Kaiser to conduct MIC Study • FHWA grants FDOT a ROD in May 1998 • Kaiser assets acquired by Earth Tech 2000 • Earth Tech acquired by AECOM 2008
What is the Miami Intermodal Center Program? • Transportation hub for Miami-Dade County • & South Florida region • First program of its kind undertaken by FDOT • Major partners/stakeholders include • USDOT / FHWA • Miami-Dade County & its transportation agencies • MDX • SFRTA
Create connectivity in Miami-Dade County where none existed • Decongest roads leading to the county’s number one economic generator Why Do We Need the Program?
Connectivity • Serves as a Central Station similar to those found in various urban areas in U.S. • Provides safe & seamless transportation connections • Includes numerous roadway enhancements
Decongestion • Absorbs rental car & shuttle bus traffic at airport • Alleviates traffic tensions on roadways to & from airport • Roadway improvements have enhanced traffic flow on nearby roads & highways • MIC has given Le Jeune Road back to community as a major north-south artery

Rental Car Center Under Construction / Spring 2010 Opening COST: $343M • Relieve airport curbside congestion • When MIA Mover is operational, congestion will be decreased by 30 percent • Secure rental car “shopping mall”
