How to get the most from… OSU VPN
You must have… • A valid ONID username and password to download and use OSU VPN • Preferably, a high-speed internet connection • (For SCIENCE servers), your Windows password • science\username password
Once you have connected, you can… • Access your Z drive (home directory) • \\sci-home\homes • Access your T drive (shared work space) • \\storage • Send SCIENCE email through email clients • You can send/reply from your IMAP account
Connecting to the Z drive (home directory) • To connect to your Z drive: • You go to Start Run and press enter Then you type in the following… \\sci-home\homes
Connecting to the T drive (shared folders) • To connect to your T drive: • You go to Start Run and press enter Then you type in the following… \\storage
Authenticating to the server • You will be prompted to authenticate using your Windows password • science\username password
What you will see after authenticating • You will recognize your home directory (Z drive), but the T drive will look like this…
Choose the appropriate folder on the T drive… • You should have no problem getting into the folder/s for which you have permissions on the T drive (just like on campus) • If you do encounter problems, there could be permission restrictions • You can troubleshoot this if you add the direct path of your share folder • \\storage\EMT\als1007
Connecting to Remote Desktop • Can’t always use host names • Know your IP address (ipconfig) • Make sure your Remote Desktop is enabled • Connect to VPN…launch Remote Desktop Connection • Use your IP address in to connect • IP addresses change for most people, so be sure you know what it is before leaving campus
Connecting to your hard drive • Can’t always use host names • Know your IP address (ipconfig) • Make sure you are a local administrator • Connect to VPN • Start Run \\128.193.224.224\c$ • IP addresses change for most people, so be sure you know what it is before leaving campus
MacOS X connections • Connections to SCIENCE servers require that you run MacOS X 10.3 or higher • Connect to VPN • From the "Go" menu at the top of the screen • click "Connect to Server"
MacOS X connections • To connect to the T drive type in… • smb://storage.science.oregonstate.edu • To connect to the Z drive (home directory) type in… • smb://science.oregonstate.edu
Web VPN • OSU offers a web based VPN client • https://sds.oregonstate.edu • There are some glitches with the interface, the certificate is expired…this throws up red flags • Trust the certificate (click yes to several pop-ups) and you can establish a connection
Web VPN and OSU_PUB • Web VPN can be used in conjunction with OSU_PUB to provide secure connections • Once you are connected to OSU_PUB then go to https://sds.oregonstate.edu • This will not work unless you are using OSU_PUB to obtain an IP address
Problems… • Users have complained of dropped sessions • Wireless connections can be inconsistent and cause sessions to drop • Sessions left idle for long periods of time will drop • ISP’s with physical cable problems can cause session drops • There is no set time for your connection to terminate, but if it is idle and others trying to authenticate, it will bump you off
