  3. Animals provide many food that people enjoy! These foods are high in nutrients and help us live healthy lives. Without good food, people are not healthy and do not grow as they should.

  4. Meat • We get meat from animals we raise and from wild animals. • Meat animals • An animal raised for meat

  5. Meat Animals • Cattle • Fish • Turkeys • Chickens • Swine • Sheep

  6. Other Meat animals • Horses are used as meat animals in some countries.

  7. Exotic meats are a booming trend such as: • Bison • Ostrich • Alligator

  8. Clothing • Clothing is made from different animal by-products • Wool • Leather from hides

  9. Some animals are raised specifically for products to make clothing. • Mink for their fur • Certain breeds of sheep for their wool • Angora Sheep-mohair

  10. Hides from cattle, sheep, kangaroo, and snakes are used to make leather for: • Belts • Shoes • Jackets • Other items

  11. Feathers • Feathers from geese may be used in stuffing pillows

  12. The MOST VALUABLE product!!!! • Pearl

  13. Often used in jewelry, the pearl is formed by an oyster when sand or another foreign body gets inside the shell. • Some oysters are grown to produce pearls. These are known as cultured pearls.

  19. Animal By-Products • An animal by-product is a product made from the parts of animals that are not used for food. • Example: Bone meal for fertilizer

  23. Medicines • Historically the insulin used to treat diabetics was produced from the pancreas from livestock. Today insulin is produced more through biotechnology. • Heparin for blood clotting is from livestock lungs.

  24. Household products Fertilizers Candles Lanolin An oily extract from sheep wool. It coats the animal's wool, helping to keep it dry and healthy. It also softens the skin and acts as an anti-fungal and antibacterial agent. Because of lanolin's protective qualities, it is commonly used in cosmetic creams and lotions designed to smooth and moisturize the skin.

  25. Economic Impact • Animal products provides use of land and other resources and conserves the soil. • Helps provide jobs and increases the tax base.
