A life long goal… • Executive Functions and Frontal Lobes • Developmental stages • Children rely on other regions of the brain (Segalowitz & Davies, 2003) • The brain changes all the time • Full brain development continues into early 20’s. (Lebel & Beaulieu, 2011) • Connections are established, strengthened, and pruned throughout life depending on our behavior

  4. Teen Development • Similar brain size as adult brain • Fewer connections • Weaker connections • Slower processes

Telling Signs • Elementary • Poor self-regulation • Cannot delay gratification • Struggles to follow instructions • Difficulty getting started on a task • Frequently forgotten homework • Completes work at last minute • Messy or missing materials • Takes an inordinate amount of time to follow through with simple tasks • High School • Completes work at last minute • Arrives unprepared for class or tests • Disorganized written expression • Messy or missing materials • Disorganized or non-existent notes • Messy appearance • Frequently forgotten deadlines • Poor time management

  6. What to do… • Scaffold and fade • Organizers • Agendas • Study Schedules • Step by step instructions • Use checklists • Technology – Calendars, alarms, notes • Check-in for understanding • Appeal to several senses • Encourage brainstorming
