Tier I in Diplomas Now Collaborating around The Big Push
Agenda • Common Definition of Tier I (15 min) • Big Picture Goals (20 min) • Next Steps (2012-13) (10 min) • Resources • Q & A (15 min)
Common Definition: What Should Tier I be? • “The transformation of secondary education” • A clear articulation of teaching, learning, and climate that serves as: • Motivation for many stakeholders • A basis for organizational planning and professional reflection • A language for directing Tier II and III supports
Common Definition: Examples • Teaching: • From Instructional Blueprint: Differentiate through intentional grouping. • Learning: • From Common Core: • Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings1, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations. • Climate: • From DMC in Boston: We use respectful words and actions.
Big Picture Goals:What this looks like inside DN… • Roles and Responsibilities laid out for school based teams and within organizations • Clear expectations (work streams) for school based teams around Tier I work • Chunked and sequenced • Distinct training regimen for Tier I work
Next Steps (2012-13) • Develop a “Climate Blueprint” • TD • Learning the TD Instructional Blueprint • Awareness training on Blueprint for all DN staff (Local Exec and school based teams) • Aligning the vision of TD and CY • Share Best Practices (DNIST) • Coordination between RLT and IF’s (Local Exec) • IF training of CM’s (school based teams) • Engage CIS in securing Career Academy partnerships (and other Tier I possibilities) • School based teams
DN Tier I Resources • Tools: • The School Transformation Plan • The Transformation Manual • The Instructional Blueprint • People: • Instructional Facilitators • Regional Literacy Trainers • Instructional Coaches/School Staff • CY Literacy, Math, and Behavioral Intervention Design Teams
Here are four things to discuss later… • What does DN mean by Tier I? • Where do Tier I conversations happen in your school? Does the DN team have access to that? • What are some Tier I initiatives going on in your school? Do those address the needs of your students? • How well do all three partners understand the Instructional Blueprint?
