A. Be the Project Representative • Encourage post member activity • Keep in contact with study staff • Relay questions from post members • Ask for information on topics that your post members may suggest • Keep the post officers up-to-date • Organize meeting activities
B. Encourage Participation • Focus on opinion leaders • Congratulate active members • Use the newsletter • Invite members’ family and friends • Consider phantom members
C. Learn and Share Information • Today is an example • You don’t have to become a blood pressure expert! • Some post or auxiliary members know more • Post members’ physicians know more • People know themselves better than you do • You can lead by example: If a post member brings information, support them

Nuts & Bolts • Handle equipment and materials • BP monitors, pedometers, scales • Get on the agenda • Ask for our help if you get resistance • If possible, make health Q&A an item • Keep the Health Corner stocked • Share project “products” with us • Put us on your mailing list for newsletters, flyers, etc.
E. Research Activities • Be positive about evaluation • If we don’t prove it helps, it will stop • If we can’t do this, we won’t be able to do other projects with VSOs • Explain the study • Goals of the study • Answer questions, or make us aware • Provide feedback about process
Support for Leaders • Training in how to reach goals • Blood pressure basics • How to help adults change behavior • Help conducting presentations • Educational materials • One or more of us will come to a post meeting during the project • Access to clinical expertise
Support for the Post • POWER Program pays $200 annually to participating posts • No strings attached • May be used for POWER activities • Access to YOU! • We hope you learn some useful things • You can get “back-up” from POWER staff • Equipment and educational materials • BP monitors, pedometers and scales • Brochures, pamphlets, handouts, etc.
