  1. 5 Sure Shot Ways to Improve Your Child’s Handwriting Poor handwriting is something that most of the parents can easily relate to. Believe or not, we all have been through this phase in our childhood or after our child started going to school. But, bad handwriting is not something that cannot be rectified. There could be many reasons for poor handwriting. Handwriting is multi-tasking. Your brain tells to you form and write a shape, and your hands as well as fingers move left and right to form those letters. At the same time, your eyes focus on the pen and pencil, moving around with the hands. Writing is a fine motor skill that develops in child eventually. So, instead of assuming that your child will have a beautiful handwriting from the start, you need to work along on their motor skills. You need to start working on them at the age of 6 because at this age, children develop the dynamic tripod grasp, which is the ideal pencil grip. Poor letter formation, wrong pencil grip, poor pressure, inconsistency in upper and lower case writing, spacing of words are some of the handwriting problems that children face. Let’s look at some of the ways that can help you improve your child’s handwriting and the strength of the hand. #1 The pencil grasp The child must hold the writing tool correctly. Make sure the length of the pencil should not be more than 6 cm, and the child should hold it in place with index and middle finger and thumb. You can make child practise the pencil grasp by using crayons and sketch pens. #2 The relaxed grip If there’s a strong imprint of the child’s writing on the next page, it means the child is applying a lot of pressure on the pencil. This could lead to finger cramping and eyesight issues. Calm down the child, relieve the stress, and tell them to hold the pencil again. #3 Work on motor skills When you will work on the motor skills of the child, it will help them in holding the pencil properly, coordinating better, maintaining posture, and writing neatly. Small household chores like folding laundry and arranging toys can go a long way in improving the motor skills of the child.

  2. #4 Pay attention to proportions Less focus on proportion could be another reason for poor handwriting. Since every letter has a specific design, the child must maintain their distance, width, style, and size. Parents should tell the child difference between upper and lower case in terms of style as well as the size. Also, writing similar alphabets together will help in learning cursive style. #5 Using right stationery It is very important to pick the right school stationery supplies for the child. A good pencil will improve their grip, they will not get stressed, and will also apply less amount of pressure. Other than pencil, it is important to have eraser that cleans up the errors in one go. When practising, use four lined pages which will help the child in writing in cursive form. Writing on ruled or white sheets can make the handwriting worse. Parting Thoughts It takes a lot of practise to have a neat and clean handwriting. Parents can play handwriting based games and try to make every moment a teaching-learning moment for the child. All these tips will tremendously help the child in having a good handwriting.
