Literary Elements of Aladdin • Suspense: • Will Jafar steal the lamp and take over the world? • Will Jasmine and Aladdin fall in love? • Will Genie ever be set free? • Will Aladdin survive? • Theme: Greed/Selflessness; Telling the truth/Be yourself; Imprisoned/Set free • Setting:Agrabah; Middle East; Before technology • Language/Point of View: Simple words because it is a kids movie; Aladdin’s point of view– lead character (we see the story through the good guy’s eye) • Monologue/Dialogue: Many times Aladdin talks to himself to think things through; Funny dialogue between Aladdin and Genie • Empathy: We all have wanted to be someone we are not before; We have all been greedy before; We know that Aladdin is a good person deep down and although he is lying to Jasmine, we want her to fall in love with him anyways because we know he is good; We all have thought about what our 3 wishes would be

Make-Up and Hair Design • Used to assist in creating the appearance of characters • So the actor is not washed out on stage by the lighting • Change shape of the actor’s face • Rouge, Eye shadow, Eye liner, Lipstick, Mascara, Face paint, Eyelashes, Powder • Must be dramatic
How to become a Make up artist… • Theatre arts degree– stage make up is different than every day make up • Some beauty schools offer theatrical make up classes • Learn important techniques such as hand-eye coordination, ability to draw straight lines and consistent shapes, creativity, good grooming and personal hygiene habits, etc. • Build portfolios to show their clients and employers • Work as freelance makeup artists or work for cosmetics brands in department stores
Costume Design • Create characters • Balance the scene with texture and color • Enhance character’s personality • Distort or enhance the body
How do you become a costume designer? • Bachelor’s in Fine Arts or Theatre Arts to work at a local theatre, company, or freelance • Master’s in Fine Arts or Theatre Arts to work as a professor in costume design • Know how to sew and alter clothing • Know how to measure • Know color theory • Know about types of materials • Know how to draw
Group Project- 50 points • FIRST, Draw a sketch of what you want your costume to look like • Use one person as a model (both people will be making the costume) • Create a costume using found items: garbage bag, paper, rolls, egg cartons, plastic, string, marker, etc. • Winning team will get 5 extra credit points, other class will vote

PROPS • Stage property aka PROPS • Things used on stage by the actors • Anything moveable or portable • To make the play more realistic (instead of pretending an item is there)
HISTORY OF PROPS • First props ever used were hand held masks in Greek Theatre, known as comedy and tragedy masks
PROP MASTER • Person that designs, finds props • Doesn’t get credited that often • Important for the realism of the play
Different PROPS • Prop weapon • Stunt props • Hero prop
PROP GAME • Use different objects as props • BUT, do not use them for what they are supposed to be used for • EXAMPLE: if you have a hat, use it for something that is NOT a hat
Performance Elements • Acting • Communication- CLEAR • Non-verbal expression • Character blocking and movement • Stage directions
assignment • Choose a monologue (I have some to choose from) • Read it and read it again • Make sure you UNDERSTAND what it is about • Translate it to ASL • Memorize it • Perform it for the class using the PERFORMANCE ELEMENTS
