Music in the Church • Zwingli saw music as a distraction in the Church • He had a particular dislike for the organ because he thought it represented the Catholic Church • He recommended selling organs to give money to the poor
Differences from Luther • Luther wrote 95 theses; Zwingli wrote 67 these • Luther said salvation came through faith; Zwingli said it came through good deeds • Luther believed that the body and blood of Christ were spiritually transformed in the bread and wine; Zwingli saw it as symbolic (Communion) • Transubstantiation

Civil War • The Swiss Confederation was split between Catholics and Protestants • Catholics wanted to form a union with Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor • In 1531, the Catholics waged a surprise attack on the Protestants
Civil War • Zwingli marched out with his army and was killed in battle • His successor was Heinrich Bullinger • At the Treaty of Kappel, each canton would pick its religion • Switzerland is half Protestant and half Catholic today
