Algebra I – The Gatekeeper • California students fail Algebra I at extraordinarily high rates. • In 2006-07, an expected 40% of the state’s 9th graders will need to repeat the course. • In fall 2004, nearly 48,000 Los Angeles Unified School District, 9th graders took beginning Algebra and 44% failed the course.
