Occupation-specific mentoring relationships Skilled Newcomer Professionals Canadian Professionals Mentors Mentees The Mentoring Partnership Launched by TRIEC (Toronto Region Immigration Employment Council) in November 2004. Mentors are not expected to find a job for their mentees
Who is TRIEC?TRIEC Objectives: • Individual - Convene and collaborate with partners, creating opportunities for skilled newcomers to connect to the local labour market. • Organizational - Work with key stakeholders, particularly employers, to build their awareness and capacity to better integrate skilled newcomers into the workforce. • Systemic - Work with all levels of government, enhancing coordination and affecting more responsive policy and programs for skilled newcomers employment.
Durham Project Success • Pilot Project (March 2011 - March 2012) • Funding • Community Partners and Recruitment • 32 mentees in the program • 12 mentees awaiting a match • 6 mentees in partnerships • Regulated Professionals (Non-Health)

Mentoring Coach • A critical part of the mentoring relationship – they are always present and available to support the mentoring relationship • The coach recruits program mentees, they also coach both mentee and mentor during their relationship and follow-up with the mentee for 12 months following their partnership; • Speaks with the mentor and mentee by phone or in person at monthly check in; • Clarifies the communications protocols between parties involved; • Provides information and referrals to other resources/programs; • Receives and provides feedback regarding relationship, program etc., • Provides guidance when expectations are not being met, boundaries are perceived to have been crossed, or tested.
Mentees • Newcomer to Canada (less than 3 years) * • Internationally trained with professional qualifications but lacking Canadian work experience and professional networks. • Currently unemployed or underemployed. • Is otherwise job-ready.

Mentors • An established Canadian professional • Has a minimum of 3 years work experience • Willing to commit 24 hours over 4 months to mentor
Program Impact 83% of mentees said the mentoring relationship made a positive difference to their job efforts. Almost 80% of mentees secured employment after the mentoring relationship 67% increase in average annual salary of mentees after mentoring. 98% of mentees had a better understanding of relevant professional skills and how to customize their résumé for their profession. *2008 Research Findings 70% of Mentees who were in the mentoring program between November 2010-11 are now employed in a field related to their occupational experience and qualifications. *2011 TMP IT System Data
