I AM COMMANDER COLLINS I’VE BEEN TEACHING FOR 16 YEARS I went to college at Oklahoma Christian University and High School at Edmond North. I am married to Mrs. Collins the High School AP Art teacher. I have three kids, Wilder, Gwyn, and Adalyn. I have two dogs, Layla and Larry Bird. I love to draw and am working on a Children’s Book that if you will leave me alone I might actually be able to finish. I like Tacos. I know Kung Fu. I AM THE HEAD CROSS COUNTRY COACH and ASSISTANT TRACK COACH If you have two lungs and two legs you need to run Cross Country and Track If you are in soccer, basketball, or baseball you need to run Cross Country. If you are in volleyball, softball, or basketball you need to run Track. If you have access to free tacos you need to run Cross Country and Track. If you bring me Gummy Bears I will let you run Cross Country and Track.
ART I Art-1 is an introductory art class for beginners. The structure is based on learning the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Each nine weeks is a unit with assignments to practice and to apply the concepts of the Elements and Principles..
ART II Art II - Art-2 is an advanced class, focusing on experimenting with art media and concepts. Once students have learned the basics of Art, it's time to experiment and try different art techniques and media to choose their favorite.
CLASSROOM GOALS To help students develop creativity, dedication, and critical thinking skills. To enrich students with a better understanding and appreciation for the visual arts. To help nurture and improve students’ talents and skills concerning the visual arts. I TEACH ART BECAUSE I WANT MY STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE THE JOY OF CREATING AND COLLABORATING WITH OTHER CREATIVE PEOPLE.
Here’s the rules suckas… • Be Respectful – Treat others how you want to be treated, both your classmates and the instructor. • Be Responsible – Take care of your materials, your projects, and your area. Be clean and orderly. • Be Present – Make sure you are “in the moment.” Listen to instructions when they are given. Pay attention to classroom procedures and focus on the task at hand. (Also, please complete homework for other classes at home). • Be Pleasant– Art should be fun. Although it takes practice, hard work, and dedication to improve as an artist, you should enjoy the process of creating. • Be Confident– We learn by making mistakes. Don’t be afraid to have to rework an area of your art, it will only make you that much better. There is no such phrase, as “I can’t!” I WILL NOT do your artwork for you.
Grades • Projects constitute around 80% of your grade • We have 15-20 projects per semester • If you can’t get the project done in class you take it home • If you miss a deadline you will receive a zero until you turn your completed project in • At the end of the 9 weeks, any projects not turned in will stay a zero
Grades • Daily grades like sketchbooks, quizzes, and class participation will make up 10% of your grade • You will have a cumulative Nine Weeks test and a Semester test that will make up the final 10% of your grade • For some of you this will be the hardest class on your schedule.
HOW YOU’RE GRADED After showing Commander your work and getting the “You are now done” blessing, you will complete a Self Critique Rubric to turn in with your work. I will then complete my portion of your grade on the same sheet of paper. You are graded much more on EFFORT than on TALENT. Copying another student’s work is plagiarism. If you plagiarize you will be given a zero.
WHAT TO DO Getting Supplies If you need something get up and go get it. Don’t take all the supplies back to your table. Get what YOU need and get back to your seat. Cleaning Up We will clean up 5 minutes before the bell. You will not leave class unless the room is clean. DO NOT line up at the door or stand in the hallway before the bell. Stay in your seats. Turning in Work When you complete a project, show Commander to get the ok to turn in, then put your work in the COMPLETED WORK folder on Commander’s desk. You can’t start a new project until you finish the last one.
Get to Class! When you enter the classroom, come in quietly and calmly. As soon as we have your sketchbooks you will have sketchbook projects that will be graded at the end of every other week. All other supplies, books, bags, etc. can be left in your locker. Students should be in their assigned seats before the bell rings. Roll will be taken based on your assigned seat. If you are not in your seat you will be counted absent. If you enter class after the bell rings you will be charged a tardy. After the fifth tardy in a semester, detention is given for each additional tardy. Dropping your stuff off and leaving does not qualify as you being on time.
Why you talking & Where you at? Talking Your primary reason for being in class is to improve as an artist...not talk. I don’t care if you talk but don’t be loud and don’t talk when I’m talking. Restroom If you are a tiny tank and have to go pee pee that’s fine. Let me know where you’re going. If you are roaming the hallway or meeting your homeboy to vape you will never be allowed to leave ever again.
Phones CELL PHONE POLICY: There is a “no cell phone policy” in the Art Department. We have discovered that the devices are more of a hindrance than a help. Upon entering the classroom, students will place their phone in their assigned pocket on the door or leave them in their backpack. At the end of class, after cleaning up, you may pick up your phone. Any student caught with their phone in class will receive a discipline referral.
You choose your seat • Once your choose your seat it does not change without permission • I will take roll based on whether you are in your seat or not. • THE CHAIRS DO NOT MOVE!
