The Slave Ship (1840) • By Joseph Turner • Based on an incident in 1783 in which the captain of a slave ship who was insured for the value of slaves lost at sea but not for those lost to illness threw all sick slaves overboard to drown. • In the next slide, notice the chains, in the wake of the ship, that seem to rise up from the blood-red sea.
