Conditions • The candidate should perform this skill on a simulated patient under existing indoor, ambulance, or outdoor lighting, temperature, and weather conditions.
Indications • Any patient with severe bleeding that is uncontrolled by direct pressure, elevation, and pressure points
Red Flags • Tourniquet use is a bleeding control measure of last resort. • Prolonged lack of circulation can result in loss of the limb distal to the tourniquet.
Attempt to control bleeding: • direct pressure • elevate extremity • pressure points
Place small stick or rod, the diameter of pinky finger and < 12 inches long, on bandage and tie a knot
Secret: Make sure stick or rod is centered under knot
Write “TK” and time of tourniquet application on patient’s head or tourniquet
Use PPE!!!
Try all other methods of bleeding control before considering tourniquet
Document the time of application on patient’s head or tourniquet
