Top Ten Facts About Bullying 1. Bullying is more than just teasing. 2. Anyone can be a bully. 3. Anyone can be a victim. 4. Bullying isn’t a modern problem. 5. Bullying affects everyone. 6. Bullying is a serious problem. 7. We can work together to find solutions. 8. A comprehensive plan will produce the best results. 9. Children a risk can be helped. 10. Schools are responsible for protecting students.
Classroom Definition Bullying is when a stronger, more powerful person hurts or frightens a smaller or weaker person deliberately (on purpose) and repeatedly (again and again).
Warning Signs For Parents • Having more money than he/she can explain • Buying things he or she normally can’t afford • Having new possessions (games etc) and claiming that “my friends gave them to me” • Defying parental authority • Behaving aggressively toward siblings • Exhibiting a sense of superiority • Being determined to win at everything • Blaming others for his/her problems • Refusing to take responsibility for his/her negative behaviors
Students Who are Bullied • Passive Victims- anxious, sensitive loners who give off “victim” signals, lack self-defense skills, don’t think quickly on their feet, and have few friends to support them. • Provocative Victims – easily aroused, impulsive, annoying kids who tease or taunt bullies, egg them on, and make themselves targets but can’t defend themselves
Examples of Student Designed Rules for the Classroom • We don ‘t tease, call names, or put people down. • If we see someone being bullied, we speak up and stop it (if we can) or go for help right away. • We make new students feel welcome. • We listen to each other’s opinions. • We look for the good in others and value differences.

The Olweus Pledge • We will not bully others. • We will try to help students who are bullied. • We will try to include students who are left out. • If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell and adult at school and an adult at home.
