  9. Unit 10 Changes Text A Translation Simple Changes for a Better Life 1Like a lot of people, I used to have a pretty fixed routine each day, and I often felt bored and frustrated. I used to dream of winning the lottery and having an exciting life. Then I came across an article that changed the way I think. It said, “You don’t need to do anything major to make life more interesting.Just try a few simple changes.” The article went on to give some suggestions and here are a few examples: TEXT A

  10. Unit 10 Changes Text A Translation • take a different route to work or school; • have lunch with someone you don’t know well; • start a conversation with a stranger every day; • find free activities to do in the evenings and at weekends; • call a different friend or relative every week.

  11. Unit 10 Changes Text A Translation 2 So, I started to make some of these changes. For example, I used to complain that you need a lot of money to have fun. It’s just not true. A quick search on the Internet and in my local paper, and I found lots of free activities – exhibitions at museums and galleries, concerts given by local schools and clubs. In a month I went out three or four times a week, and every weekend, and it didn’t cost me a thing.

  12. Unit 10 Changes Text A Translation 3 Then I decided to put all of these ideas on a website. I was amazed at the number of people who visited the site and left positive comments. Take Jack’s comment for instance: “I’m into sport and I’m quite good at it. But I found that even something I enjoy could become boring. I was definitely a creature of habit. I used to train on the same days, at exactly the same time, and do exactly the same things. All my friends were playing the same sports, so I never met anyone new. Then someone mentioned Mike’s website and I decided to check it out. The advice there was beautifully simple – add variety and you will get your motivation back. Now I do a different exercise routine every day, have taken up judo for the first time, and I’m also helping local kids get into sport. I feel so much more positive.”

  13. Unit 10 Changes Text A Translation 4 So there you have it. Simple changes for a more interesting day. Why not give it a try? What have you got to lose?

  40. Unit 10 Changes Text B Translation Ben’s New Life in Hong Kong 1Ben, a marketing manager, has moved from Britain to Hong Kong. He writestwo emails to Jane, a good friend back in London, about the changes he has experienced and his new life. TEXT A

  41. Unit 10 Changes Text B Translation Hi Jane, 2Just a quick email to say I’ve arrived and am slowly finding my feet. It’s been an absolutely mad few days. Got off the plane and was immediately hit by the heat – just unbelievably hot and humid. I was picked up at the airport by Tony, who works for the company. He was taking the mickey a bit in the taxi because he said I looked like some little boy just up from the country – and I guess I was – with my mouth hanging open, gazing out of the window. I mean, it’s SO different.

  42. Unit 10 Changes Text B Translation 3 Anyway, after a couple of days getting over my jet lag and orientating myself a bit, I started at work. Mind you, I can’t say I’ve exactly been slaving away at my desk. I seem to have spent most of my time being taken out for lunch, meeting people and partying! It’s been pretty wild. Better get down to some proper work soon or the company will wonder what they’re paying me for! 4 How’re things with you? Ben

  43. Unit 10 Changes Text B Translation Hi Jane, 5 Sorry it’s been a while. Things have settled down a bit since I last wrote. In fact, I’ve been working fairly long hours. People just don’t seem to stop here. When I used to travel into London from the country, I thought the pace of life was pretty fast, but here it’s completely ridiculous!

  44. Unit 10 Changes Text B Translation 6 Fortunately, I got through the hard days at the beginning and am used to the life here now. During Easter, the company offered me a free flight back to England, but I thought why would I want to go back to the miserable weather and rubbish food! I decided to cash in my flight and use the money to travel round here a bit. There are some amazing places to visit and I’ve been onto the Chinese mainland quite a bit. The people are so much more in touch with their culture here – back home, people just aren’t interested anymore.

  45. Unit 10 Changes Text B Translation 7 Life here is a lot easier. I have all my laundry done through a service in my block; a maid comes and sorts out my flat every day. It’s not like the service in England – half-hearted and late! Hong Kong is miles better. It’s really efficient. People seem to take pride in what they do. Anyway, gotta dash – got my Chinese lesson. 8 Skype me sometime soon. Ben

It was not as big as London. 4. What did Ben say about his work in the second email? A. It was very busy. B. It was relaxing. C. It was funny. D. It was all about meeting people. A A
