Setting the scene • One of ten boroughs within Greater Manchester • Population approximately 210,000 • Historically a market centre with emphasis in wool manufacture • Manufacturing industries grew including metal and chemical processes • Has a rich heritage including SSSI, SBI, SPB, listed buildings and conservation zones
HIGH PRIORITY SITES • 35 sites identified: • 21 Dye works • 3 Chemical works • 3 Asbestos works • 2 Gas works • 2 Oil processing facilities • 1 Colliery • 1 Industrial landfill • 2 Petrol filling stations • 160 LANDFILLS, 40 may represent a gas risk
IDENTIFICATION OF PROBLEM 2004 investigation into re-development of scrap yard in SE corner 2005 initial Council funded investigations Boreholes identified gas within and outside landfill area Spike survey identified gas in gardens Survey of houses did not identify presence of gas
