  2. Question 1 • According to Winston, the “hope lies in the proles.” Why? (2) • They are the majority of the population • They are not brainwashed/under the control of the party- their minds are free • If the Party is ever to be overthrown, the proles are the only ones who can do it

  3. Question 2 2) Winston reads a children’s history textbook. Who/what is the pre-revolutionary villain described on these pages? Describe some of the horrible things this villain used to do. (3) • The villain = capitalists • Wear a top hat, live in a giant house with 30 servants while others starved, abuse workers, sleep with workers daughters/wives

  4. Question 3 • 3) Winston goes into a prole pub with the hopes of asking an old man some questions. What does Winston want to know? (1) • If life is better now than it was before the revolution.

  5. Question 4 4) Is the conversation productive? Why not? After this conversation, should one still be hopeful about the proles? (3) • It is not productive • The man’s memories are nothing but a “rubbish heap” • It does not leave the reader hopeful, because the proles appear angry, drunk, and dumb

  6. Question 5 5) Who are Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford, and where do they hang out? (3) • 3 of the original leaders of the Revolution • The last 3 to survive the great purges that left only Big Brother • They were arrested for various crimes against the party, to which they confessed • They disappeared for a while came back for a short time and were eventually re-arrested and killed • They hung out at the Chestnut Tree Café

  7. Question 6 • 6) Describe the “proof” that Winston once had that the Party alters history. Besides the fact that they alter history, what else did this prove? Why/how? (4) • He had a newspaper article with a picture/caption showing that Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford were in New York • It was dated the same day that they were supposed to be in Siberia betraying secrets to Eurasia. • It proved that JAR were innocent of the crimes they confessed to committing • It was also concrete proof that the Party alters history
