HTML Email Newsletters Tips and Troubleshooting Mark Branom, IT Services
Agenda • Photo, Graphic, and other Image Issues • Font Issues • Statistics – click-through • Statistics – Google Analytics • Q & A!
Image Issues • Image sizes – should be set for the appropriate widths! • Images must reside on a web server accessible via a web browser. • All references to the image must be fully-qualified (full URL). • Make sure you put in the ALT, height, and width attributes. Use hspace and vspace to add padding around the picture (not CSS).
Font Issues • Use <font> tags or inline styles ONLY. Never use external or internal style sheets. • Use fonts that (almost) everyone has. • Use pictures of text for those extra-special text items (logos, etc.). But be sure to include the alt, height, and width attributes.
Statistics • Click-through statistics • Use a URL shortening service like goo.gl or bit.ly to track click-through statistics. • Overall statistics • Use Google Analytics to track overall statistics for your email newsletter. • Warning: *some* email clients treat JavaScripts as triggers that the email is spam. Since Google Analytics uses JavaScript, your email newsletter *may* be read as spam.
