African Civilizations • Trade brought economic, cultural, and religious influences to the African kingdoms
Great Zimbabwe 1300-1525 AD (CE) • Located between the Limpopo and Zambezi River, west of the Indian Ocean • Great Zimbabwe was the capital • Very wealthy and powerful. Used nearby resources of gold. • Participated in Maritime trade routes.
Great Zimbabwe • Name means “Large houses of Stone” in the Shona language
Axum 100-600 AD • Located from the Red Sea and Nile River to the Ethiopian highlands. • Triangular trade with India and Mediterranean world • Capital city also called Axum • Very important trading port- traded crops, gold, ivory, salt

Ancient Mali • Mansa Musa was its richest and most powerful ruler (1280-1337) • Built universities and mosques throughout the empire • In 1324 made the Hajj to Mecca - brought so much gold with him that he caused an economic inflation in the Mediterranean
Songhai • Empire from 1340-1591 AD • Gained more power after the decline of Mali • Located in West Africa along the Niger River • Again, became an important empire for trade in west Africa
Timbuktu • Important city located in West Africa along the Niger River • Vast amounts of Trade- had merchants from Asia and Europe • Center of Education- Islamic Universities
Religion in West African Kingdoms • West Africans were originally polytheistic and worshipped gods and goddesses identified with forces of nature • Animism: belief that natural objects possess a spirit • Islam was brought to these areas through trade
