Shortage Of Officials • Beginner officials leave the profession of officiating within three years • As the number of HS and College programs grow, the numbers of officials available is declining .. Why? .. • Fee’s paid to officials • Abuse • No recognition for efforts • Scheduled times of events • Travel (i.e. distance, gas prices and food) • Solutions ? (increase pay / control environment / treat professionally .. Etc. )

Training Officials • Rules Clinics • Self-confidence concepts • Develop positive attitude and confidence • Communication • Use of signals and verbal reporting • No Calls • Conscious decision to ignore an infraction .. • Preventive Techniques • Talking to players and coaches .. Active Prevention

Words of Wisdom • “Phantom Calls” words possible thing an official can call is something that did not happens • Control Emotions .. while under pressure • “whole picture” • Patience • Rapport • Presence • Experience • Relate to off-the-ball action • Individuals plays • Game strategy • The Integrity of the Game

The Ideal Official • Notices everything, but is seldom noticed • Controls players effectively with understanding • Has a decisive voice and manner • Is able to handle unusual situations • Is always concerned with the players safety • Cooperates with fellow officials and is complimentary • Is able to physically be is position and make the call • Knows the game and the intent of each rule • Keeps personalities out of officiating • Is consistent throughout the game • Must never be sarcastic • Must eliminate any slowness and delay • Is wanted, rather than tolerated
