OUTLINE • To demonstrate Server 2008 and its deployment features. • Deploy Software to computers and/or users based on certain criteria • Use group policy or WDS (Windows Deployment Services)
MOTIVATION • Demonstrate how Windows Server 2008 can be used as a Deployment tool. • Fully utilize Server 2008 and its components. • Reduce Third-party software in a Windows environment.
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 • Windows Server 2008 contains most of the tools you will need to set up and maintain a domain. • Administrators can manage the network, deploy software, troubleshoot issues, from a remote location.
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 • Active Directory Services • Group Policy • Remote Desktop • Advanced Firewall Settings • IIS 7 • Virtualization tools included
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 • Reduction of Third-Party Tools and applications • Increase in Security • More deployment options • Desktop • Software • Config. Changes • Hardware Adjustments • Registry Changes
Problems solved by Server 2008 • Reduction of Third-Party applications • Using Group policy to deploy software • Deploy software to users or computers • Add, upgrade, or remove software applications • Easily troubleshoot issues from same interface
Setup • Follow pictures are the setup I created. • Used: • 1 Switch • 2 computers • 1 Server • 1 Client • Windows Server 2008 Disc • Windows XP Professional Disc
Procedure • Installed Windows Server 2008 • Added necessary Roles • Active Directory Services • DNS/DHCP Service • File Services • Web Services • Windows Deployment Services (WDS)
Procedure • Configured Roles • Created Domain • Modified Users • Created OU • Added Test users to OU • Selected package to install • Created MSI file to install
Group Policy/Active Directory • http://www.microsoft.com/mspress/books/8763.asp • http://www.desktopstandard.com
Implementation • Created MSI file, used group policy to install software package to computer or user at next login.
Implementation • Link and enforce GPO • Make sure it is properly enabled and review the deployment settings • Log in computer that is receiving deployment and install will run based on settings
Implementation • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwNEjwHfcJo • Video Showing how group policy objects are installed at login.
PROPOSED SOLUTION • Used simple setup to show functionality • Created OU for testing • Made sure there were no other installs in conflict • Changed default policy so it was not in conflict
RESULTS • Server 2008 is a great way to deploy software and images to computers • No need for Third-Party software to perform functions • Easy to manage under single GUI • Uses already in place MSI files for deployment • Can create other files to deploy
RESULTS • Automatically refreshes • Instant changes • Active Directory users and computers integrated • Works on any computer in domain that can receive selected software
CONCLUSIONS • Works great • Easy to implement • Must have permissions to install programs • Software programs must be ready and packages should be prepared thoroughly
