  1. Act II Prologue Essay Excellent Work

  2. Class 1A The purpose of the prologue is to review what has already happened and sort of describe what is going to happen. (S.R.) When Romeo went to the Capulet party he saw Juliet and fell in love and forgot about Rosaline. “Now Romeo is beloved and loves again, Alike bewitched by the charm of looks.” The first quatrain talks about forgetting Rosaline and replacing her with Juliet.” (S.V.)

  3. Another summary happens in second quatrain, line 7: “But to his foe supposed he must complain.” This summarizes the fact that Romeo and Juliet have fallen in love, but their families are rivals so they are not supposed to love.” (J.M.) The third and final quatrain of this sonnet has a line stating, “To breathe such vows as lovers use to swear.” This is talking about marriage. The line before says he does not have access to this marrying. With their families’ hatred, marriage is out of the question. (K.H.)

  4. The couplet at the end of the prologue shows what might happen in the story. It says, “But passion lends them power, times means to meet.” This explains how much they love each other and that nothing will stand in the way of that. (G.S.) The prologue to Act II is mainly recapping the events of Act I; however, it also foreshadows Act II. (H.C.)

  5. Class 3AB The purpose of a prologue is an introduction, in this case to an act, that overviews the next act before the real action begins. In this prologue, it kind of acts as a review fo the last act also, but still giving hints of the future. (C.H.)

  6. In the first quatrain, it tells you that Romeo’s love for Juliet has ended and that he has a new love, Juliet. It also tells you that Juliet is way better than Rosaline. (B.D.)

  7. In the second quatrain, Romeo describes his love for Juliet but nobody can know because Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet, and their families are enemies. So they can rarely see each other. Romeo describes how he has found love again and they were attracted by each other with their “charm of looks.” (Z.M.)

  8. In the third quatrain it tells us more of what will happen. For example on line 9 it says that because he is her enemy, they might not get to see each other. This foreshadows some sadness and determination to see each other without getting caught. It also says that she is so much in love she would do anything or meet anywhere to see him. This foreshadows that they might meet in some strange places or do some clever things to speak to each other. (K.D)

  9. But the couplet tells they plan to overcome this problem, for “passion lends them power” to overcome this problem and be together. (N.E.) In conclusion the purpose of the Prologue is to give background information of what’s coming next and just for this act, they give you a preview of the balcony scene. (Z.M.)

  10. Class 1B The purpose of this sonnet is to tell the reader the overall conclusion to Act 1 but is also the introduction to Act 2. (K.Di.) The first quatrain tells how Romeo used to be deeply in love with Rosaline and thought nobody was better than she. Now Romeo is deeply in love with Juliet and Rosaline doesn’t seem as beautiful and lovely to him anymore. (K. Du.)

  11. The second quatrain is about how he has found love again and has fallen for Juliet’s good looks. This is shown in the text when he says, “Romeo is beloved, and loves again.” It is also shown when he said “bewitched by charms of looks.” Also in the second quatrain it explains how Romeo and Juliet are from rival families and his only love is his rival. This is shown in the text when he said, “But to his foe supposed he must complain.” (A. M.)

  12. In the third quatrain, it says that because they are enemies, he won’t be able to have access to get married, but she will meet him anywhere. This shows what the characters are going to have to face and overcome to prove how much they love each other. (M.H.) In the couplet on the bottom it is saying that although it is hard for them to be together with their families’ disputes and everything, when they see each other it all makes up for it. Seeing them is so sweet it makes it all worth it. (B.S.)

  13. The prologue of this act is like foreshadowing what is going to happen in the next stage of the play. (M. H.)
