  1. George Washington Birthplace NM: Geodatabase Development for Resource Management and Planning Bill Slocumb GIS Specialist and Research Associate North Carolina State University Raleigh, NC National Park Service Northeast Region Research and Technical Support for GIS

  2. Presentation Focus Areas • Database goal • Available data • Database issues • Database development approaches • Enterprise database delivery research and development

  3. Database Development Goal • To develop a geodatabase solution bringing external databases and spatial databases together in a seamless GIS interface.

  4. I&M Amphibians and Reptiles Fish Lepidoptera and Odonata Mammals Vegetation Cultural ASMIS FMSS List of Classified Structures Cultural Landscape Inventory Fire NPS Available Data(Spatial and Tabular) • Park Base Data • Roads • Trails • Septic Tanks and Fields • Hydrology • Wetlands

  5. Other Available Data(Spatial) • Chesapeake Bay Program • Watersheds • Geology • Bathymetry • Conservation Fund • Parcels • Zoning • Virginia Institute of Marine Science • Tidal marshes • Shorelines • Federal Agencies • FWS • USGS

  6. Data Compatibility Issues • External databases have complex relationships that must be maintained in the GIS interface. • Connection between external databases and spatial data must be seamless to the end user.

  7. Data Compatibility Issues • External database updates must be displayed real-time in the GIS interface. • Should be able to work with the external databases in GIS interface or in the native application, e.g. Microsoft Access.

  8. Flat-file System Shapefiles Coverages Images GRIDS Personal Geodatabase Microsoft Access backend File size limitations Relationship classes Linked Tables Enterprise Geodatabase MS SQL Relationship classes Views Linked Server Technology Database Development Options

  9. GIS Enterprise Goal: • To rapidly deploy customized GIS applications using standard and project specific spatial and tabular data to parks and programs to enhance current capabilities.

  10. Deployment Options • Limited Functionality • Google Earth • ArcIMS • ArcGIS Server • Virtual Computing Laboratory • Thin client • Full GIS functionality • Quickly deploy customized applications

  11. Virtual Computing Lab (VCL) • Schedule reservation • Remote desktop connection • Uses standard windows OS and tools • Concurrent viewing • Single edit session by owner • http://vcl.ncsu.edu/

  12. VCL • No additional client software needed • Run current version of selected software • Publish customized ArcMap documents • Looks like your desktop!!

  13. Current Activities and Discussion • Working with Views in MS SQL; • Automated download and normalization of national databases for end-users (LCS); • Increase storage efficiency; and • Developing data model options in cooperation with WASO
