  1. Topic: The United States Giving AidProduct: Bake Sale and Volunteering with the Fisherman By Natalie Tita Mentor: Alex Gowen Advisor: Teresa Drian Teacher: Nan Danehower

  2. Did you know…. • Between now and tomorrow morning, about 40,000 children will starve to death. The day after tomorrow, 40,000 more children will die and so on.

  3. Why I chose my Topic and Product • I chose my topic because I was interested in the United States involvement in other countries, especially developing countries.

  4. Should the United States give aid to Developing countries? In the research for my paper I learned… • That the United States gives more aid than any other country in the world; most of that aid is in the form of military assistance. • Aid sent to developing countries rarely reaches the people it was intended for. • Aid can create the unintended consequence of dependence.

  5. More research facts…. • The aid needed to prevent the great majority of child illnesses in the next decade is equal to the amount of money spent in the US to advertise cigarettes annually. • Its time for developed nations to rethink their approach to assisting undeveloped nations.

  6. Bake Sale and Volunteering with The Fisherman • For my product, I volunteered with a nonprofit international organization called The Fisherman. (name derived from Chinese proverb)

  7. Bake Sale and Volunteering with The Fisherman • With The Fisherman, I got to see the inter-workings of an aid organization and raise money to collect medical and hygiene supplies for orphans in Moldova.

  8. Learning Stretch • This product was a learning stretch for me because I was treated like a real member of an organization and saw the processes of delivering aid and researching mission trips. • I had to learn business etiquette for my bake sale.

  9. Steps Taken in Project • STEP ONE: Contacting Alex Gowen after finding The Fisherman online

  10. STEP TWO: Deciding to do a bake sale to raise money for supplies for orphans. Buy the goods.

  11. STEP THREE: Make the goods.

  12. STEP FOUR: Sell the goods.

  13. STEP FIVE: Use the money to buy supplies

  14. Obstacles • Time management • Operating a bake sale • Checking my email • Communication

  15. Successes • Raising three hundred dollars • Learning about aid delivery • Becoming a permanent member of The Fisherman

  16. Self Reflection What did I learn about my self? • I need a timetable for ALL future projects. This product has helped me learn to work independently successfully.

  17. Thank you for your time.Do you have any questions?
