Reading A balanced or comprehensive literacy approach is used. This includes mini-lessons, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading, as well as read-alouds, literature studies, author studies, and explicit phonological and phonemic awareness skills instruction. • Scholastic Book orders will be sent home each month. • Online ordering
Writing • Writing Students write for many purposes with emphasis on explanatory and descriptive writing. Students also practice basic research skills, with an emphasis on information collection, summarizing, paraphrasing, and identifying resources. We follow a Writer’s Workshop approach to writing (mini-lesson, independent writing, conferencing, sharing) • Writing Rubrics (Learning Targets) • Grammar Usage, Conventions, Mechanics • Word Study Approach Discovering patterns, rules and meanings. • Cursive Writing

Interactive Notebooks • These notebooks will be completed using composition notebooks for each subject. They can be used for review at any time. It is a learning process and requires time and several procedures.
Homework • Homework is a nightly 30 minute process • Reading-Silently/Read Aloud- 20 minutes and reading log BLOG • Math- as needed and assigned by teacher • Word Study-complete two activities per week • Projects as assigned • Content based assignments as needed • Agendas • Initial each night
Assessments/Grading • Assessments will be graded with 1,2,3,4 • Clarity- 4=A, 3=B, 2=C 1=D • Formative and summative assessments will be used • Observations • Anecdotal notes • Discussions/conferences • Work samples • Verbal and nonverbal participation • Enrichment Opportunities • A copy of the report card is attached

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures • First bell @ 7:35 am. • Students arriving between 7:30 and 7:35 should report to the front hall until the bell rings. • Late bell is at 7:50. • Tardy Slip • Dismissal @ 2:35 and 2:40 pm. • Early dismissal procedures
