  1. The Khyber Pass: South Asia

  2. Importance • the most important pass connecting Pakistan with Afghanistan. Throughout history it has been an important trade route between Central Asia and South Asia and a strategic military location. The actual pass summit is 5 km (about 3.1 miles) inside Pakistan at Landi Kotal. The pass cuts through the Safed Koh mountains which are a far southeastern extension of the Hindu Kush range.

  3. A Series of Invasions • the Indo-Aryans migrated to India through the Khyber Pass 2000 - 1500 B.C.

  4. The Greeks • Greeks invaded around 326 B.C. under Alexander the Great’s leadership

  5. Muslim Invasions: the Mughul Empire – 1526 A.D. • The golden age of the Mughul empire existed under Emperor Akbar

  6. Great Britain – Age of Imperialism • The British invaded Afghanistan through the Pass and fought three Afghan Wars in 1839-42, 1878-80, and 1919 A.D.

  7. Modern day- the War on Terror and arms smuggling • connected with a counterfeit arms industry, making AK-47's and Martini-Henry rifles, among others
