WELCOME! 2013- 2014Back-to-School Night 5th Grade
Social Studies Social Studies text on line- www.eduplace.com/eservices username- myclass1 password- my class1 homework- vocabulary definitions, summary sheets, study guide, note taking, studying for upcoming quiz and test, upkeep of notebook grades- average of quizzes, tests, and any type of graded in class project including their notebook
Types of Writing • We will be creating at least one of each of the 3 types of writing pieces: • Narrative • Persuasive • Expository
Writing • Throughout the year there will be a variety of lessons and activities working on the 5 domains of writing: • Focus • Content • Organization • Style • Conventions We will be using the writing rubric to grade these domains.
Spelling • The Rebecca Sitton Program- A spelling program that uses phonics, vocabulary, word usage, literature and writing all to improve a child’s spelling abilities. • The children are responsible for their own ongoing list that they are to study. Student Workbook
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt-Journeys 6 units- First one is School Spirit! Large group instruction Small group instruction Novels Assessments: Worksheets Unit tests “fun group” worksheets Novel tests Nightly reading Reading responses In class activities Reading
“FUN” groups (flexible groups using novels) • Groups of 4 or 5 children will be assigned to read the same book. The reading will take place both in school and at home. The assignment will involve reading several chapters a night. During reading the individual child is responsible for filling out the worksheet about the book. The next day the group will meet and discuss the book using the worksheet as a guide. • Discussion Director- This job is to develop a list of FAT questions • that will spur discussion within the literature circle. • Vocabulary Enricher- This job is to be on the lookout for a few especially • important or difficult words in the reading selection. • Literary Luminary- This job is to locate a few special sections of the text that the • group will hear read aloud. The idea is to help fellow • classmates remember some interesting, powerful, funny, • puzzling, or important sections of the text. • Connector- This job is to find connections between the book the group is • reading and the world outside.
