New at the State Level • New EOG testing- including BOG (beginning of grade) for 3rd graders • Instructional Hours/Days minimum requirement increased to 1025 hours or 185 days • Power School/Home Base: software to house all student information and assessments • 2014-15 Parent Portal to Open for Elementary Parents • Budget Changes • Reduction in instructional supplies • No pay increase for staff
New at the State Level • Read to Achieve • 3rd Graders to read on grade level by end of year beginning 13-14 by passing EOG • If not on grade level- attend Summer Reading Camp • Retest after Camp to see if on grade level • If not- placed in 3rd/4th combo type classroom for next year with focus on reading intervention and retest again mid year • mClass Reading assessments • 3 times a year benchmarks- parent reports shared • Monitoring during the year for struggling readers
New at the District Level • Welcome Dr. Jim Merrill, new superintendent • Teacher Leader Corps • 4 Teachers from each school receive training on integrated use of technology and Discovery Education resources • Set up learning labs for other teacher s to visit • Provide training to all other staff on each early release day • Technology Integration Facilitator Positions • Phase in over 4 years- starting with 32 schools • Supporting student and classroom use of technology
New at the District Level • Development of New Report Card • Aligned with curriculum standards and in Power School • New grading standards for elementary 1-4 • Descriptors going home with interims on 9/30- elimination of 3*- only level 3 or level 4 performance • School Bond • 16 New Schools, 6 Schools renovated, 79 school major repairs, Technology infrastructure (more info at www.wcpss.net) • Vote is held October 8th
New at the School Level • Confucius Classroom Grant • Mandarin Chinese Instruction available for 4th and 5th graders (Ms. Huang on staff from Chengdu, Sichuan China) • Chinese culture learning through IB Units K-5- connections and visits to the Chinese classroom for natural learning connections • Continues IB pathway to East Garner Middle and Garner High School • FWES team to visit China for 8 days in November (Pierce, Walker and Goodrum)
New at the School Level • Visiting International Faculty (VIF) from New Zealand on 2nd Grade Team- Chrissy Herring • Received 50% Technology Integration Facilitator Position and will share with Cary Elementary • Teacher Leader Corps- Bolick, Carter, Milantoni and Long- to lead FWES teachers • PBIS (“Go for the GOLD”) highest recognition by Department of Public Instruction as Exemplary School for 3rd year in a row
New at the School Level • Healthy Brains Healthy Bodies focus continues • Addition of students to the Task Force to make plans for the school • Updated security system installed at front doors – infrastructure was in place to upgrade without additional cost • Enrollment increase of over 50 students and two additional special education classrooms (pre-K to begin Jan. ‘14) • Spanish teachers alternate sharing villa and on a cart • All classrooms in building used • Longer Carpool line and more walkers • New walker dismissal safety plan implemented
New at School Level • School-Wide Reading Challenge to reach 36,000 books • Principal/Asst. Principal to do…. If reach the goal • Only way to be a better reader is to practice reading • Going Green with Communication • September documents saved 7500 copies and 4000 sheets of paper • Check website for all info sent home, too- including school messengers
Looking Ahead • Magnet Schools of America president Scott Thomas visiting Wake County and district put Farmington Woods on his tour schedule- will visit Thursday 9/26 • Interim reports for progress go home with all students on September 30th • Election Day, October 8th in FWES Cafeteria- lunch in classrooms • International Walk to School Day October 9th- meet at Kildare Plaza by 8:40am
Looking Ahead • Fall Pictures October 15th • Field Day- Friday, October 25th- Volunteers Needed • Volunteer Clearance- due by October 31st- must register if new or reactivate on school system computer • FWES PYP 10th Birthday Celebration October 31st
