SIERRA Svalbard Missionaka CASIE - Characterization of Arctic Sea Ice Experiment Location: Svalbard, Norway Duration: Jun 15 - Jul 10 2009 Deployment Team: 20 people • Science Goals • Determine the degree to which ice-roughness monitoring via remote sensing can detect basic changes in ice conditions such as ice thickness & ice age. • Investigate relationships between ice roughness & factors affecting the loss or maintenance of the perennial ice cover. • Determine how roughness varies with different kinematic conditions & ice properties. • Demonstrate UAV technology & operational testbed. • Funded Jointly by NASA SMD ESD Cryosphere Science and Airborne Science Programs POC’s Jack Kaye – R&A Program Manager, NASA HQ James Maslanik – Principal Investigator, Univ. The role of small UAS for NASA Earth science • Small UAS under 500lbs are an important tool for providing earth science data in remote regions or in dangerous phenomenon; • Aerosonde, Scan Eagle, Manta and SIERRA are all within this class • Science objectives include sea-air flux measurements in the hurricane boundary layer and arctic sea ice measurements; • Instrument & aircraft miniaturization and commoditization can enable more measurements in more places

  7. Svalbard Deployment Info • Location. Ny-Ålesund Research Station is located at 78°N, 11°E, about 100 km NW from Longyearbyen on the island of Spitsbergen (2400 km north of Oslo, and 1200 km south of the North Pole). It is the northernmost permanently inhabited settlement in the world. • Accommodations. Dormitory style rooms with a simple private lavatory/shower. No TV, phone, or internet in room. Meals are served in a common dining hall. There are common rooms with TV & DVD. • Weather. Average summer temperature is around 5 C. High winds and fog do occur. There is continuous daylight from April 19th to August 23rd. • Health & Medical. There is no doctor or medical facility at Ny-Ålesund. Take whatever prescription and over-the-counter medications you may need. • Power. 220 V, 50 Hz. • Time. Svalbard is on Central European Time, 1 hour ahead of GMT, 9 hours ahead of PDT.
