SP-22: Moving Civil Data to GIS Using Bentley Map V8i Kevin Jackson, Technical Director, Transportation and Local Infrastructure
Bentley Map V8i SS1 • MicroStation Add-on • Included with • InRoads Suite V8i SS1 • GEOPAK Engineering Suite V8i SS1
Importing GIS Data • DEM – Surface data • SHP – ESRI’s Vector data • DGN – Vector data • DWG – Vector data • Raster Images – Raster data
DEM Files • Generally supplied by USGS or some other government entity. • Usually 7.5min (30m grid) for continental U.S. • Coordinate system usually not provided but can be in the header • Tiled
SHP Files • One SHP file per layer or level • Level name is name of file • Does not carry symbology • Several accompanying files • PRJ - Projection System • SBN - Spatial Index • DBF - Attributes (metadata) • SHX - Shape Index file • XML - Attributes (metadata in XML format) • All have to have the same name
DGN & DWG Files • Stores coordinate information in header • Most GIS systems will read them • Can use world file
Raster Images • Georeferenced • Carries projection system information in header of file • Other • Cannot carry projection system • Uses world file • World file must be same name as raster file • Examples: • JPG file uses or JPGW or JGW world file • BMP file uses BMPW or BPW world file • TIFF file uses TIFFW or TFW world file
Reprojection Paths SHP Raster DEM DGN Raster SHP Master DGN File SHP Oracle Spatial SDE ProjectWise
Exporting GIS Data • DGN – Vector data • DWG – Vector data • SHP – ESRI’s Vector data • Raster Images – Raster data
