  1. General Learning Outcome #2 By: David Rivera-Beck and Sam Bender

  2. Explain how principles that define the biological level of analysis may be demonstrated in research (that is, theories and/or studies)

  3. Command Terms • EXPLAIN = give a detailed account including reasons or causes • DEFINE = give the precise meaning of a word, phrase, concept or physical quantity

  4. Principle #1:Behavior can be innate because it is genetically based

  5. Innate • To be born with

  6. How can this be studied? • Observing twins • This helps study nature vs. nurture • Nature vs. Nurture = do you act the way you act because of your genes or if you act because of the way you were raised • Uses monozygotic (mainly) and dizygotic • Video! • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J71L_15mO4M&feature=relmfu

  7. How can this be studied? • Diathesis-Stress Model • Basic Model -> -> -> • <- <- <-Actual Model

  8. Diathesis-Stress Model • Shows the behavioral outcome of biological and genetic vulnerability • This one explains the relationships with children and their parents and the chance of suicide

  9. What else? • Innate birth defects that deal with mental disorders • Examples: Autism (effects behavior) and leukodystodies (effects movement, speaking, vision, hearing, and mental development)

  10. Principle #2:Animal research can provide insight into human behavior

  11. Insight • In psychology it is the understanding or the relationship that helps interpret a problem

  12. How can this be studied? • Animal research is used to make discoveries in medicine and safety products • In psychology animals are used to grow organs • There are many ethical problems with these experiments

  13. How can this be studied? • Most experiments deal with ablation and lession • ABLATION = remove • LESION = damage • These are used to observe how the brain reacts under MRIs and PETs

  14. Why is animal research inportant? • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RL_KZ2bAQE

  15. Principle #3:There are biology correlates with behavior

  16. Correlate • In relation with

  17. How can this be studied? • Neurotransmitters and hormones are studied

  18. Neurotransmitters • Some neurotransmitters and their functions

  19. Hormones • An example how hormones can effect your behavior! • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ds5c0Dnk9c • Hormones effect your thinking by increasing or decreasing an emotion
