  1. Aim: What is the Excretory system? Do now: What is the difference between a tissue and an organ?

  2. Excretory system • The excretory system deals with the life function of excretion • When you see the pre-fix ‘EX’ think out. • Exit • Excrete • Exhaust

  3. Three main organs/tissue • Lungs – excrete gaseous waste – CO2 • Skin – excrete liquid waste in the form of sweat • Kidneys – excrete ‘nitrogenous’ waste in the form of urine

  4. Kidneys • The kidneys are two ‘kidney bean’ shaped organs on either side of your torso • The kidneys filter your blood of toxic material • Toxic material is sent to the bladder and mixed with water to be urinated out • Non-toxic material is recycled and sent back to body

  5. Kidneys • The kidneys also help you retain water • Or If you have excess water, it helps you excrete that water. • The kidney aims to keep a good water balance. • What life function is being described above?

  6. Kidneys • The waste the kidneys excretes is from digested protein and dead cells – Amino acids and nucleic acids from old DNA • Do you think your urine is acidic, basic, or neutral?

  7. Exit Question • What do you think the amount of ‘yellow’ in your urine is dependent on?
