Maine Demographics: A Profile • Maine is aging rapidly and at a rate faster than that of the rest of the nation. • National studies indicate elders are most likely to experience one or more chronic illnesses. • Five chronic diseases—heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic lung disease, and diabetes— account for more than two-thirds of all deaths in the United States.
