Purpose: • To let the reader know what the essay is going to be about • To declare what you believe and intend to prove • To unify, or tie the essay together • In an explanatory essay it is your claim
Key Features: • One sentence in length • states the main idea of the essay in a complete sentence, not in a question. • Lists the subtopics • does NOT directly announce your main topic. • for example do NOT write, “In this paper I want to show why…” “I want to express my opinion about…”, or “I will explain how…”
Key features continued • Does NOT contain the words “You or I” • Located in the very last sentence of the Introduction paragraph
Examples: • A high school teacher is a great career because of the daily tasks, the education and training that is completed, and the salary and career opportunities. • Because of the work that is done on a daily basis, the knowledge learned through the education and training, and the career opportunities, being a teacher is a great career.
