  2. What is Cyber Bullying? Cyber bullying is when a child or teenager is harassed, humiliated, embarrassed, threatened or tormented using digital technology. This is not limited to the Internet; cyber bullying also encompasses bullying done through such things as text messages using cell phones. Cyber bullying is often a systemic attempt to get another child or teen to feel bad about him or her self through electronic communication. It usually happens more than once, and includes leaving demeaning messages on someone’s Facebook page, uploading embarrassing photos, or spreading gossip or rumors through instant messaging and text messaging. Tactics Used to Cyber Bully:(Enough is Enough, Internet Safety) Gossip: Purposely posting or sending cruel messages with the intention of damaging a person’s reputation or to ruin relationships with friends and family. Impersonation: Breaking into someone else’s email or other online accounts and impersonating that person in an effort to embarrass that person or damage their relationships with others. Harrassment: Constantly sending or posting messages that are offensive, rude, or insulting.

  6. Cyber Bullying Tactics (cont.) Cyber Stalking: Posting or sending unwanted or intimidating messages, which may include threats. Flaming: Online fights where horrible messages are posted on websites, forums, or blogs. Outing or Trickery: Tactic in which someone tricks another person to share private (often embarrassing) information. This information is then shared online with others. Cyber Threats: comments made online or through texts that are threatening or imply violent behavior.

  7. What can Highville do to help protect our students from Cyber Bullying?(Tips from Rules and Tools: Enough is Enough) Set age appropriate filters on our school laptops. Consider using monitoring software. Consistently checking laptop history to see what the children have been viewing. Disallow access to chat rooms and social networking sites. Use of safe search engines. Educate our children and their parents on safe internet usage. Supervise children while they are using the laptops.
