Davidson Middle School 8-9 Grade Configuration 39 Teachers (22:1) 850-900 Students Working Class Community w/ 30% Free and Reduced Lunch School of Choice is 24% of Student Population
The Problem:2006-2007 School Year 405 Students w/ 1 or more D’s/E’s 45% of Student Population (127 - 8th Grade, 278 - 9th Grade) 64 Students at risk of not graduating on time (15% of 9th graders) 58% Failure Rate in 9th Grade Algebra These are end of the year numbers. At the end of the First Semester the numbers were even worse.
Finding Solutions Superintendent instructed the Davidson administration to investigate intervention programs. Student Success Task Force - A selected group of teachers, counselors and administrators then met over the next 7 months to find a solution. 8 members representing all curricular areas.
Student Success Task Force Met after school weekly. Teachers were to take information and discuss it with their colleagues by department. Weekly updates to entire staff. Met monthly for full days. Invited guest speakers and began to weigh options. Trimesters Retention Mentoring/Tutoring Curriculum Modification Teaching Practices
The Solution:2007-2008 School Year Both the Task Force and teaching staff wanted a program with high expectations and early intervention. Not a program which addressed the issue after a child had already failed.
ABCI Achievement By Continuous Improvement
ABCI • ABCI is an academic program designed to raise expectations for every child. • Every assignment, quiz or test in every class must be completed and be of quality work.
Quality Work • Students must give true effort in answering every question to the best of their ability. • Work must be at a 70% (C-) or better to be accepted. • If an assignment is worth doing, it is worth doing well.
Philosophy of ABCI • High expectations matched with high support result in high achievement for all students.
Higher student engagement and increased achievement. A shrinking achievement gap. Improved teacher instruction and assessment practices. Improved student-teacher relationships. Reduced student discipline problems. Strengthened partnership with families. Results
Interventions If students do not turn in quality work, have missing assignments or do not achieve at/above 70% on a quiz/test we have instituted the following interventions to assist in their success.
Academic Coaching Tutoring sessions staffed with certified teachers in both core and elective courses. These teachers will directly support learning. Subjects and skills will be re-taught and reinforced. Needed time will be provided to achieve mastery of concepts.
Coaching / Tutoring Times Before School Academic Coaching - 30 minutes, 7:00-7:30am, T-F2. Lunchtime Academic Coaching - 20 minutes, all 3 lunches, M-F3. After School Academic Coaching - 1 hour, 2:45-3:45pm, M-Th
Academic Coaching sessions will be staffed by teachers from core academic areas (Math, Language Arts, Science & Social Studies) multiple times each week. At least once a week before school, 3+ times at lunch and 2 times a week after school for each area.

SATURDAY SCHOOL 4 Hours8:00am- 12:00NoonStudents who have even a single assignment missing or not of quality as of 3:45pm the Thursday prior, will be required to attend SS for additional Academic Coaching. Students will stay as long as necessary to complete their work or may stay for additional re-teaching. At least 5 certified teachers will be in attendance for each Saturday School.
Planning Center • Is a classroom staffed by a certified teacher who will do full day academic coaching. • Students will not move through their normal schedule. They will only leave for scheduled bathroom breaks or to go to the office. Lunch will be eaten in the Planning Center. • Students will not return to their regular classroom until ALL missing or not of quality work is completed.
Grading • The grading scale has not changed. Teachers will just not give D’s or E’s - instead Powerschool will display the grade as an “I”. • Failing grades will only be given after all intervention opportunities are unsuccessful. • Late or redone work will receive a maximum of 70% as a grade. • If at the close of the Semester a student has an “I” in a course, they must attend either after school AC or Summer School. The cost is $7.50 per day until the course is completed.

Grading 2007-2008 • 70% Cut Score for all assignments & assessments. • All grades must be above 70% or student receives a final grade of “I”. 2008-2009 • 70% Cut Score for all assignments & assessments. • Assignments and Assessments did not have to be made up until the student dropped below a 70% average. • Students have a 2 week window to redo assignments. • Final grade will be an overall average and must be above 70% to receive a passing grade. • Grade scale is now ABCE
Academic Coaching Lunchtime Academic Coaching -Will be used for students who just need additional time to complete assignments and are not getting that time at home.2. After School Academic Coaching -Will be used for reteaching and more 1-on-1 tutoring.3. Saturday School - Will be used primarily for assessment make-up (quizes/tests). Needs to be at regular intervals throughout the year.
